The Risky Behaviour Lab’s Daily Monitoring Project
Do you struggle with depression, eating problems, or self-injury? Are you willing to participate in a research study that uses your smartphone and a smart watch to understand how everyday experiences impact people’s emotions, relationships, and wellbeing?
The Risky Behaviour Lab’s Daily Monitoring Project aims to understand how various thoughts, feelings, and social experiences relate to young people’s coping behaviours. Participants in the study will complete an interview (by Zoom or in-person) and online questionnaires to make sure you are eligible. Then, you will install an app on your smartphone that will prompt you to complete short, 1-2 minute surveys several times per day. We will also send you a SmartWatch to wear to monitor your physical wellbeing. You will be asked to monitor your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours every day for 23 days total. Finally, you will be asked to complete two follow-up surveys to see how you are doing 3 and 6 months later.
Our surveys and interviews will ask about various coping and other behaviours, including eating behaviours, self-injury and alcohol/substance use. You must be 17-25 years old*, live in the Greater Victoria area, own a smartphone you are willing to use for the study, and be able to complete interviews and questionnaires in English.
Participants can earn up to $208 if they complete all parts of the study. [UVic Students enrolled in Psychology courses can receive some of this compensation in the form of SONA study credits – included in advertisements posted in Victoria/UVic forums only] All participants can earn use compensation earned to keep the study smartwatch if you choose. The total time required is 18-20 hours, over about 7 months.
